Overweight and obesity through the years

Let's face it... losing weight is darn hard, isn't it? For most of us, especially as we get older, weight isn't just going to fall off because we want it to. Instead, it's going to take a change in your mindset and lifestyle and a lot of plain old hard work!

So... I'm a firm believer that the more you know, the better equipped you are to make changes. So in this section of the site, we're going to look at the weight loss problem in American and elsewhere in the world. Remember, you're far from alone! We'll also talk about some basic weight loss statistics and facts, including how you can tell if you're really overweight or worse, obese... and why you should change if you are. We'll talk about some of the special issues women face with losing weight too.

What You Need to Know About Being Overweight Women

Most women decide to lose weight for one of two reasons:

Overweight women are unhappy with their weight
  1. They want to be healthier, OR
  2. They want to look better.

Those were my main motivations. But losing weight can also improve your overall quality of life, your self esteem and your ability to do things that are physical. As the pounds begin to melt away, no matter how slowly, you will eventually realize you feel better all round.

To lose one pound, you need to burn 3500 calories more than you eat. If it takes you all week to build up that large a deficit, then you'll lose about one pound a week. That's pretty much how I've done it and it's pretty typical for most people on a weight loss program to lose about a pound a week. Sure, you'll see them dropping 6 to 10 pounds every week on Biggest Loser, but remember... they're working out 6 or more hours a day!

Something else you should know... the majority of overweight women, as well as overweight men and kids too, got that way at least partly because they used food to deal with emotional stress. It's called emotional eating and very few of us are immune to it. So, if you want to be successful at losing weight and then keeping it off for life, you'll need to prepare to deal with your emotional issues and learn to cope with them in a non-food manner.

And, finally... as I said above, losing weight isn't easy and it's not going to happen overnight either. It'll take all your motivation, discipline and daily work to accomplish it... but the rewards are so worth it!
